Summer Lawn Care Checklist: Keeping a Natural Lawn Green Through the Dry Months
By Russ ·
Summer can be tough on a natural lawn. Longer, warmer days are great for growth early on, but spells of dry weather, heavier footfall from garden gatherings, and increased evaporation can leave grass looking stressed and patchy if it's not looked after. Here's a straightforward seasonal checklist to help keep your lawn in good shape.
1. Mow Less Often, and a Little Higher
It's tempting to keep cutting on the same tight schedule as spring, but during hot, dry spells it's worth easing off slightly and raising the cutting height. Longer grass shades its own roots and the soil beneath it, helping the lawn retain moisture and cope better with heat stress.
2. Water Deeply, Not Often
If you do water, a good, deep soak less frequently encourages roots to grow downward in search of moisture, making the lawn more resilient. Frequent light watering tends to encourage shallow roots, which struggle more when things dry out. Early morning is generally the best time, before the heat of the day causes excessive evaporation.
3. Keep an Eye on Weeds
Weeds are often more visible in summer as they compete with grass for water and nutrients. Regular removal — whether by hand or treatment — keeps them from spreading and gives your grass a better chance to thrive.
4. Don't Panic About a Little Browning
Many lawns naturally go a bit dormant and straw-coloured during prolonged dry spells — this is usually a normal, protective response rather than a sign the lawn is dying, and it typically greens back up once rain returns and temperatures ease.
5. Plan Ahead for Autumn Recovery
Towards the end of summer is a good time to start thinking about aeration, scarifying and overseeding to help the lawn recover from the summer months and head into autumn in good condition.
